Mausoom - Short Film

Fiction

Based on a true story of a man wrongfully imprisoned.  This story was harrowing to tell and Director Reesha Shareef was full of amazing and experimental ways of telling the story, full of abstract flashbacks, shadows, colour, black and white amongst other techniques.  Upon our initial discussions, I suggested shooting Open Gate on the Alexa Mini to limit the ratio to close to 1.33:1 and also degrading the image as the story develops, which included shooting at 3200 ISO for added noise and overcranking the shutter to 90 degrees to give it a more jarring motion.  We also transition from colour to black and white.  The amazing performance of Josef Mizzi was an emotional roller coaster for me to capture and really a pleasure to be front row for - this included Josef losing 10Kg in between our shoot dates for the final scene and growing a long beard the whole time.  This is a piece I'm so proud for the world to see.
